Chicken Life Cycle | Egg Development & Hen Anatomy | 3D Paper Model & Lesson
Product Details

Skip the incubator - hatch understanding instead! Developed in partnership with Animalearn's Hatching Kindness Project, this Chick Life Cycle Model from Inside Out Science was designed to help students explore the chicken life cycle using this interactive 3D model covering egg development, hen anatomy and reproductive structures, and all 21 days of chick growth. This humane alternative to traditional egg hatching projects is differentiated to meet the needs of both elementary and middle school classrooms.

Students begin by exploring hen anatomy and egg formation with an interactive lift-the-flap model that reveals internal organs and the reproductive system. They follow how an egg forms from yolk to shell, building strong structure and function connections. Students then create a versatile chick life cycle model that can be used as an accordion foldable or card sort to sequence all 21 days of chick development. A paper nest is included so students can “incubate” their model - making this a fun, hands-on alternative to traditional egg hatching projects.

To extend learning, students compare chick, human, and turtle development with a comparative embryology page, supported by differentiated questions for elementary and middle school learners. The resource also includes a meaningful “What Will You Hatch?” activity where students develop an idea, goal, or act of kindness - perfect for a bulletin board display. With both blackline and color options, clear teacher directions, photographs of examples, and multiple extension ideas, this lesson is designed for flexible, multi-day instruction and engaging, humane science learning.

TEACHERS LOVE IOS DISSECTION MODELS, HERE'S WHY:

❤️ Olivia H. says, "This resource is perfect for students to practice with before doing a dissection, as well as referring back to after dissections. I also like the option to use this resource for super squeamish students or when the budget is tight. I could not recommend this product more!"

❤️ Courtney C. says, "I love this for our forensic pathology unit! We are able to discuss anatomy and we do not need to use preserved pigs (for the squeamish students). This is a great resource!"

❤️ Lani B. says, "I can't say enough good things about this resource! We completed this activity before beginning our fetal pig Dissection. It gave students a great idea of what they would expect during the dissection such as placement and orientation. It was extremely successful! Thank you!"

Why teachers are switching to paper dissection models

More and more classrooms are moving toward humane dissection alternatives, and for good reason.

In real classrooms, teachers are running into challenges like:

  • Rising costs: specimens are getting more expensive
  • Inconsistent quality: shipments can arrive damaged, overly preserved, or difficult to work with
  • Limited availability: certain specimens (and even specific sexes) aren’t always available
  • Student hesitation: more students are uncomfortable participating
  • Time and logistics: setup, cleanup, storage, and safety all add up

A more reliable, classroom-friendly approach:

Inside Out Science models keep the hands-on learning, while removing many of the barriers that make traditional dissection challenging. Students can:

  • Explore anatomy in a clear, structured way
  • Build understanding without the mess or unpredictability
  • Participate fully, regardless of comfort level

Just as important, it’s about what students bring into that experience:

For many teachers, it’s not about replacing dissection entirely – it’s about giving students the chance to build confidence before they ever pick up a tool. The end goal being to create a classroom culture rooted in curiosity, care, and respect for the organism – not uncertainty or hesitation.

Whether you’re looking for a frog dissection alternative, an affordable way to do comparative anatomy, or a way to make dissection day more accessible, inclusive, and purposeful for all students, you’re in the right place.
