Earthworm Dissection Zoology | Biology 3-D Anatomy Paper Dissection Model & Lesson
Product Details

Dig into discovery with this Earthworm Dissection Model from Inside Out Science — a squirm-tastic, hands-on way to explore invertebrate anatomy and physiology from the inside out! Formerly sold under Getting Nerdy, this 3-D paper anatomy model lets students examine the structure and function of earthworms in a clean, creative, and completely humane way.

This earthworm dissection model lesson includes a student-friendly reading that introduces annelid body systems and internal structures, along with black-line and color templates to support differentiation for a range of learners. A guided PowerPoint presentation walks students through the steps of coloring, cutting, and assembling their own realistic paper worm that they can “dissect” again and again.

Created to mimic a real dissection, this Scienstructable 3-D paper model can be used as a dissection-free exploration, a pre-lab preparation tool, or a summative comparative anatomy assessment. Teachers love using it to preview organ systems before lab days, while students who opt out of traditional dissections appreciate the authentic, specimen-free experience it provides.

All Inside Out Science dissection models include templates for both sexes (where applicable) and maintain a consistent color-coding system across species, helping students visualize anatomical relationships and deepen their understanding of comparative biology.

TEACHERS LOVE IOS DISSECTION MODELS, HERE'S WHY:
❤️ Peggi R. says, "Ok, so the prep and cutting was a little intense for my kiddos, but man is it completely worth it. They LOVED having this option that gave them a full look into the earthworm without actually having to dissect one of our beloved garden creatures!"

❤️ Victoria H. says, "This was super helpful with my 5th graders prior to our dissection day. Lots of great information and was easy to put together."

❤️ Amanda B. says, "This was a splurge for me but I am so happy I did it. I teach High School Special Education for students with academic levels between Pre-K and 2nd grade. I had to modify some of the activities and shorten the vocabulary; however, the models are what really sold me. Did they take a lot of prep? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I had all the students name their worms and tied it to our previous lessons on invertebrates. Great resource! I'll be reusing those worms next year!"

Why teachers are switching to paper dissection models

More and more classrooms are moving toward humane dissection alternatives, and for good reason.

In real classrooms, teachers are running into challenges like:

  • Rising costs: specimens are getting more expensive
  • Inconsistent quality: shipments can arrive damaged, overly preserved, or difficult to work with
  • Limited availability: certain specimens (and even specific sexes) aren’t always available
  • Student hesitation: more students are uncomfortable participating
  • Time and logistics: setup, cleanup, storage, and safety all add up

A more reliable, classroom-friendly approach:

Inside Out Science models keep the hands-on learning, while removing many of the barriers that make traditional dissection challenging. Students can:

  • Explore anatomy in a clear, structured way
  • Build understanding without the mess or unpredictability
  • Participate fully, regardless of comfort level

Just as important, it’s about what students bring into that experience:

For many teachers, it’s not about replacing dissection entirely – it’s about giving students the chance to build confidence before they ever pick up a tool. The end goal being to create a classroom culture rooted in curiosity, care, and respect for the organism – not uncertainty or hesitation.

Whether you’re looking for a frog dissection alternative, an affordable way to do comparative anatomy, or a way to make dissection day more accessible, inclusive, and purposeful for all students, you’re in the right place.
