Frog Dissection Zoology | Biology 3-D Anatomy Paper Dissection Model & Lesson
Product Details

Hop into humane science with the Frog Dissection Model that started it all!

A longtime favorite of Getting Nerdy, this signature model from Inside Out Science gives students the excitement of hands-on anatomy exploration—without the mess, smell, or stress of real specimens. It’s the perfect blend of compassion, curiosity, and classroom engagement, helping students learn from the inside out.

This frog dissection model lesson includes a student-friendly reading that explores vertebrate anatomy and physiology, color and black-line templates for differentiation, and a guided PowerPoint presentation that walks students through how to color, cut, and assemble their own realistic 3-D frog. Students can “dissect” their model again and again, reinforcing key anatomy concepts through repetition and creativity.

Designed to mimic an authentic dissection, this Scienstructable 3-D paper model can be used as a dissection-free alternative, a pre-lab prep tool, or a comparative anatomy assessment. Teachers love it for introducing lab safety and structure-function relationships, while students who opt out of dissection appreciate the realistic, ethical experience it provides.

Every Inside Out Science model (formerly Getting Nerdy’s Scienstructable Dissection Models) uses consistent color-coding and includes templates for both sexes (where applicable), allowing students to identify organs and systems, observe anatomical relationships, and make meaningful cross-species comparisons.

Eco-friendly, budget-conscious, and endlessly reusable, this 3-D frog dissection model proves that science can be both humane and hands-on.

TEACHERS LOVE IOS DISSECTION MODELS, HERE'S WHY:
❤️ Courtney H. says, "My students absolutely loved this paper dissection activity! It was challenging, yet not too difficult. My students were so proud of their finished models!!!"

❤️ Kelly T. says, "This was an engaging activity that my homeschooled daughter really enjoyed. She did not want to do a real dissection and we were able to refer to this model throughout our body systems unit."

❤️ Mary H. says, "This is an amazing resource! My biology students loved coloring and assembling their frog models. With the provided reading guide, it was easy for them to identify the function of each structure and color it in their model. The assembly instructions were easy to follow. It took two eighty-minute blocks for each of my students to complete their project. This resource was very engaging, and I'll be looking into getting the other models for my zoology students. I would highly recommend this to others!"

Why teachers are switching to paper dissection models

More and more classrooms are moving toward humane dissection alternatives, and for good reason.

In real classrooms, teachers are running into challenges like:

  • Rising costs: specimens are getting more expensive
  • Inconsistent quality: shipments can arrive damaged, overly preserved, or difficult to work with
  • Limited availability: certain specimens (and even specific sexes) aren’t always available
  • Student hesitation: more students are uncomfortable participating
  • Time and logistics: setup, cleanup, storage, and safety all add up

A more reliable, classroom-friendly approach:

Inside Out Science models keep the hands-on learning, while removing many of the barriers that make traditional dissection challenging. Students can:

  • Explore anatomy in a clear, structured way
  • Build understanding without the mess or unpredictability
  • Participate fully, regardless of comfort level

Just as important, it’s about what students bring into that experience:

For many teachers, it’s not about replacing dissection entirely – it’s about giving students the chance to build confidence before they ever pick up a tool. The end goal being to create a classroom culture rooted in curiosity, care, and respect for the organism – not uncertainty or hesitation.

Whether you’re looking for a frog dissection alternative, an affordable way to do comparative anatomy, or a way to make dissection day more accessible, inclusive, and purposeful for all students, you’re in the right place.
