Eye Dissection Zoology | Biology 3-D Anatomy Paper Dissection Model & Lesson
Product Details

Keep an eye on science—literally! With roots in Getting Nerdy, this popular organ model has found a new home at Inside Out Science, where hands-on learning meets humane teaching. The 3-D paper Eye Dissection Model gives students a close-up look at how structure and function work together to create the magic of vision—no real specimens required!

This eye dissection model lesson includes a student-friendly reading that explores the anatomy and physiology of the eye, color and black-line templates for different learning levels, and a step-by-step PowerPoint that guides students through coloring, cutting, and assembling their true-to-life paper eye model. Students can “dissect” it again and again—without the smell, stress, or cleanup of traditional labs.

Designed to mimic a real dissection, this Scienstructable 3-D paper model works beautifully as a pre-lab activity, a humane dissection-free exploration, or a summative comparative anatomy assessment. It’s a classroom favorite for helping students visualize key structures and build lasting connections between organ systems.

All Inside Out Science dissection models (formerly Getting Nerdy’s Scienstructable Models) use consistent organ color schemes and include templates for both sexes (where applicable), helping students understand anatomical relationships and comparative biology across species.

TEACHERS LOVE IOS DISSECTION MODELS, HERE'S WHY:
❤️ Jenny W. says, "My son and I used this in his 10th-grade homeschool year for biology. These paper dissections replaced "real" dissections because he couldn't handle the smell of formaldehyde. It was a fantastic resource, and we both learned a lot! I recommend this to my friends all the time!"

❤️ Kathleen M. says, "This was a great resource in place of the eye dissection, since my order did not arrive in time for my class to dissect the real cow eyes. I love how it includes the reading, and writing portion, and the directions are written clearly. It would also be great for students who are absent from the real dissection, or who are too squeamish to participate."

❤️ Minela P. says, "Seriously one of the coolest things I've purchased. The PERFECT dissection for my very squeamish 10th grader to use as a substitute lab. He learned so much! Highly recommended for any high school dissection alternative."

Why teachers are switching to paper dissection models

More and more classrooms are moving toward humane dissection alternatives, and for good reason.

In real classrooms, teachers are running into challenges like:

  • Rising costs: specimens are getting more expensive
  • Inconsistent quality: shipments can arrive damaged, overly preserved, or difficult to work with
  • Limited availability: certain specimens (and even specific sexes) aren’t always available
  • Student hesitation: more students are uncomfortable participating
  • Time and logistics: setup, cleanup, storage, and safety all add up

A more reliable, classroom-friendly approach:

Inside Out Science models keep the hands-on learning, while removing many of the barriers that make traditional dissection challenging. Students can:

  • Explore anatomy in a clear, structured way
  • Build understanding without the mess or unpredictability
  • Participate fully, regardless of comfort level

Just as important, it’s about what students bring into that experience:

For many teachers, it’s not about replacing dissection entirely – it’s about giving students the chance to build confidence before they ever pick up a tool. The end goal being to create a classroom culture rooted in curiosity, care, and respect for the organism – not uncertainty or hesitation.

Whether you’re looking for a frog dissection alternative, an affordable way to do comparative anatomy, or a way to make dissection day more accessible, inclusive, and purposeful for all students, you’re in the right place.
